"I think the Biggest Loser meals are fabulous! It's a great way to simplify healthy eating. They keep me within the calorie range that I need and they are easy to use on the go."
Mike admits that before The Biggest Loser his eating habits were definitely not healthy. "I ate anything that didn't bite me first," he said. His busy life as teacher, coach, father and husband became an excuse for making poor eating decisions during the day. Mike said "I often would not eat at the right time, would hardly eat anything for breakfast, drink coffee on the way to work, not eat a proper lunch, overeat at dinner and then snack at night. Every day I would eat ice cream - and not just a scoop. Or if something tripped my trigger - pull into fast food. I used to not eat during the day thinking that it would balance out what I ate at night."
Mike may still have been on this unhealthy path if his brother Rick had not invited him to audition for The Biggest Loser as a team. While his brother made it to the final round of selections, in the end, Mike was chosen for Season 12 without Rick.
While on the ranch, Mike received some shocking news. The medical testing conducted by the doctors found that Mike had had a mild heart attack at some point. He was so unhealthy that he had developed atrial fibrillation and though he is only 62, his body was that of a 74 year-old. The doctors told him that being overweight was the biggest contributor to these health conditions and that he needed to make major changes if he wanted to live much longer. Propels and motivates him every day.
"I think the meals in The Biggest Loser Meal Plan are fabulous. It's a great way to simplify healthy eating. They keep me within the calorie range that I need and they are easy to use on the go. I just pop them into the microwave at school for a satisfying lunch. I actually took a couple meals with me to a birthday party, because I knew there would be hotdogs and chips and other not-so-healthy food. My favorite Biggest Loser meals are the pork chops, and I love the turkey and the fish dishes. My wife loves them too. She will "steal" them from me. She has lost about 12 lbs just by using the meals and eating healthier. She is a teacher - she's not even working out yet!"
Today, Mike is much stronger and his health has improved significantly. He no longer takes prescription drugs and is a lot more active. Mike told us " I sleep a lot better now and I have a lot more energy. Now I can get down on the floor and get back up again. Even something like bending over to tie my shoes and not having to pick up the shoe. I can do that now." With a new lease on life, Mike has lots of plans for the future. "I am looking forward to being able to travel, ride bikes, and do water activities at the lake," he said. "I look forward to running the Peachtree 5K in Atlanta with my son and daughter-in-law. How cool would that be for me to do at 63? I plan to do it."
Mike has important advice for anyone who thinks they might be too old to make a change, "Age is not a factor," he said. "I am living proof. You have to determine that you want to change your life… and then you will do it. You don't have to work out 6 hours a day. Just get off the couch. I am nothing special. I did not want to be a statistic. I now can have many years ahead with my family and my grandkids."
